Ready, set, learn!

At LCM, Israel Anteby was a go-getter.

Even if this record-breaking winter might have hampered some mishloach-manos deliveries on Purim and postponed the annual Presidents Day weekend ski trip (due to frigid temperatures!) to the day after Purim, at least it meant that Hunter Mountain had some pretty awesome slopes. LCM took advantage of the last snow of the season (we hope?) with an SGO-subsidized skiing trip organized by student Eli Feder. 

Though this winter has been one of the coldest since 1934, it did nothing to dampen the high Purim spirits at Lander College for Men (LCM). While snowflakes fell furiously, blanketing the streets of Queens, LCM guys were heating up the dance floor as they celebrated their beach-luau-themed Purim as festively as ever. 

Shabbos morning, LCM students read about stamping out Amalek’s name. Motzai Shabbos, they were stamping out sticky rice with Sushi Tokyo’s chef—and the help of bamboo mats. 

Last week, approximately 120 yeshiva students currently learning in Israel shuttled to Ulamei Zvhil hall in Yerushalayim for a melave malka that gave them a glimpse of what LCM, and their future classmates, are all about. Organized by LCM’s Israeli representative Rabbi Lavey Freedman, the catered event was open to those who are, or might be, interested in attending LCM next year. Attendees of the event were currently learning at K.B.Y., Shaalvim, Netiv Aryeh, Yishrei Lev, Yeshivat Shaarei Mevaseret Zion and Derech Ohr Sameach, among other yeshivot. 

For the third year in a row, some LCM students chose to stay on campus for winter break.  

Camp Zev, as it’s affectionately called (on behalf of its founder, Zev Kilstein) has been running every intersession break for the past several years to afford students the opportunity and provisions to comfortably stay in the dormitories throughout the vacation. While the program exists primarily to provide students with the necessities to keep learning even without the set structure of the academic year, Kilstein organizes fun, exciting trips to help keep the students motivated and, in essence, provide comic relief. The bein ha’zmanim program aims to have an appropriate ratio between learning Torah and taking time off to become revitalized for the next zman. 

Though the icicles on the trees lining Main Street (not to mention the shoveled-off ice lining its sidewalks) make it hard for us to remember that spring is on its way, what better way to celebrate a frozen Tu b’Shvat than with some delicious frozen yogurt and fruit?
