Clearing The Debris To Make Room For Recovery

Coordinated through Achiezer, and in collaboration with Nivneh, Lander students went to Far Rockaway this past Sunday and Belle Harbor today, to help in Hurricane Sandy recovery.

The group in Far Rockaway went to two homes and spent many hours dismantling cabinets so they could get to the drywall and then breaking up and schlepping the dry wall out.

One student in particular found it humbling to realize, even after all that work, how much still needs to be done and that “it was only a drop in the bucket”. Today’s crew in Belle Harbor trudged through mud (there was still an inch of water) and the stink of sewage to clean out one very grateful woman’s basement. More students continue to volunteer as the recovery continues, with much work still ahead.
