Fourth Annual Model Beis Din Competition

High school teams debate each other and test their knowledge at the model beis din. Adjudicated by the Lander College for Men Roshei Yeshiva, it's an exciting, creative, and competitive way of demonstrating the dynamic nature of Halacha. May the best team win!

The 2017/5777 Model Beis Din Competition Case

In Search of the Halachic International Dateline

In 1941, hundreds of talmidim from Mir and other European yeshivos traveled to the far east to escape Nazi persecution. Before reaching Shanghai, they temporarily settled in Kobe, on the Japanese island of Honshu. Realizing that they may have crossed the international dateline, many observed two days of Shabbos each week.

During this challenging time, they corresponded with Gedolai Yisroel in Europe and Eretz Yisroel, hoping to determine the exact location of the halachic international dateline. The most widely accepted views are those of the Chazon Ish, who places the line at 125° east longitude, and Rav Y.M. Tukitchinsky who places the line at 145° west longitude.

Even today, this fascinating debate has far-reaching ramifications.  Be prepared to analyze, debate, challenge and defend these two formidable views.
