Isaac Khalili, LCM 2025, shares why he chose medicine as a career and the many ways Touro is helping him prepare for his professional journey.

How did you become interested in the field of medicine?

I became interested in medicine from a young age, because of my curiosity about how the human body works and my desire to help others. Over time, I gained exposure to the medical field through my work as a medical assistant and volunteering in ambulances and these experiences solidified my passion for becoming a physician

Why did you choose Lander?

I chose Lander because it offers an excellent environment to prepare for a career in medicine while also allowing me to continue studying Torah at a high level.

What is your ultimate career goal?

I’m thinking about emergency medicine, surgery or anesthesiology but I am waiting for medical school rotations when I can experience each of those specialties hands-on to see what really works for me.

Have you had any internships? Can you share where you worked and what you did?

I currently work as a medical assistant at an Urgent Care in Brooklyn, where my responsibilities include triage, taking vitals, phlebotomy, and assisting the doctor with patient care tasks. Additionally, I volunteer on ambulances, helping provide pre-hospital care during life-threatening emergencies. These hands-on experiences have deepened my understanding of patient care and strengthened my commitment to pursuing a career in medicine.

Can you describe the research you’re currently working on?

I’m currently a research assistant with a professor here at Lander College for Men. We are investigating how specific cellular treatments affect lung cancer cells. We use a variety of lab techniques to explore these effects in detail. It’s been an incredible experience, giving me a chance to apply what I’ve learned in class to real-world research while contributing to meaningful work that can have an impact on many lives.

How is your Touro education helping propel your career?

My education at Touro is really helping me build the foundation for my future in medicine. The challenging science courses are giving me the tools I’ll need to succeed in medical school, and the supportive atmosphere, created by the students and professors, makes it easier to stay focused and motivated. Additionally, getting the chance to do research with a professor has been such a valuable experience. Overall, Touro is providing me with the skills needed to be successful in a career in medicine.
