Virtual Cybersecurity Internship is First Step on Path Toward Career in Web Development
Computer Science Major at Touro’s Lander College for Men Spent his Summer Alongside Cyber-Scientists
Sholom Abrahams, a computer science major at Lander College for Men (LCM), made the most of his summer with a virtual internship at Harbor Labs, a health care cybersecurity firm in Baltimore. Working remotely from his home in Baltimore, he spent his days doing full-stack web development alongside cyber-scientists from Johns Hopkins University. Through video calls and texts, he worked closely with and learned from Harbor Labs senior staff. It was an opportunity to explore the practical side of computer programming after focusing on many theoretical aspects in school.
The internship experience enabled Sholom to refine his career goals. “Lots of guys in college are talking about Silicon Valley companies, but in Maryland I see many companies that do cybersecurity. The cybersecurity jobs are very interesting,” he said.
A Baltimore resident, Sholom graduated from Beth Tefiloh High School then spent two years at Kerem B’Yavneh in southern Israel. He chose LCM for its combination of Judaic studies and an excellent college education. Upon arriving, he found, “great teachers, great friends and a great atmosphere.”
As Sholom completed his first year at LCM, he knew he wanted to make the most of his summer and didn’t plan on letting a pandemic get in the way. He knew someone who had interned at Harbor Labs, so he emailed the company to find out about opportunities. To prepare for the interview, he sought out tips and advice from Jodi Smolen, LCM’s director of career services. Computer Science Department Chair Dr. Jonathon Robinson helped him get ready for the technical portion.
Sholom is now in his second year at LCM and already is well on his way to a successful career.
