Medical Honors Pathway Requirements
In order to remain in the medical honors pathway program and matriculate into NYMC you need to meet the requirements below while at Lander College for Men and before applying to NYMC.
Research
As a student in the Medical Honors Pathway you are encouraged to participate in some form of research during your undergraduate studies at Lander, with a focus on research methods, design and ethics involved in the research process. This can be accomplished by direct research or by taking courses on research methods and design and bioethics. Touro and New York Medical College will assist you in securing research opportunities.
Clinical Experience
You must complete at least forty (40) hours of clinical experience over at least a six-month period approved by the co-chairs of the Medical Honors Pathway-Admissions, Promotions and Mentoring Committee, and be completed no later than September 1st of the year preceding entry into medical school. The clinical experience should be linked with a physician, health care system or other allied health care provider. Purely shadowing a professional will not fulfill the objectives of the pathway.
Community Service
You must complete forty (40) hours of community service over at least a six-month period. The service activity must be approved by the co-chairs of the Medical Honors Pathway-Admissions, Promotions and Mentoring Committee, and you must complete it no later than October 31st of the year preceding entry into medical school. This community service should demonstrate your ability to interact with people of diverse cultural backgrounds.
Required Coursework
You can meet most of the required coursework as a biology major, but there are some additional courses that are required for this pathway, and some recommended and valuable courses that should shape your elective choices. See all MHP program curriculum requirements.
Matriculation Requirements
To remain in good standing in the Medical Honors Pathway, and in order to matriculate into New York Medical College, students must meet the following requirements outlined below. If a student experiences academic or other difficulties during the undergraduate portion of the pathway, we will provide counseling and other resources to assist the student. If, despite these efforts, the student no longer meets the standards for continued enrollment in the pathway, the Admissions, Promotions and Mentoring Committee will recommend that the student no longer be eligible to participate in the Medical Honors Pathway. Such individuals are still eligible to apply to New York Medical College, or to any other medical school, as a regular applicant.
≥ 3.5 GPA
You need to maintain a cumulative GPA of not less than 3.5 – both in the sciences and overall - at the end of each year of the baccalaureate component of the program.
Satisfactory Progress
Annual progress reports from the premedical advisor to the Medical Honors Pathway-Admissions, Promotions and Mentoring Committee must indicate that satisfactory progress is being made in the baccalaureate component of the program, including high performance in all required courses, as well as those strongly recommended (see baccalaureate curriculum requirements).
MCAT
The Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) must be taken no later than September of the year prior to matriculation into New York Medical College, with a minimum total score of 29 and a biology sub-score of “10” (using the 2012 standards).
