Lander Society of Fellows

If you are accepted into the Society of Fellows, you will be expected to participate in monthly luncheons with the dean and selected faculty, discussing books that are carefully selected to stimulate discussion of topics of deep importance to the Jewish community. Members of the Lander Society of Fellows receive a full scholarship that covers fall and spring tuition as long as the student maintains a 3.75 GPA over a full-time load of coursework, including registration in the daily Talmud shiur.

Eligibility

Incoming freshmen are eligible to apply for the Lander Society of Fellows. A small number of candidates will be selected on the basis of the following:

  • Documentation: High School transcripts, standardized test scores when available, and letters of recommendation. These will be reviewed and tabulated by Dean Abramson.
  • Interview: selected candidates will be invited to a 15-minute interview via Zoom. The recording will be reviewed by a Faculty Committee.
  • Personal Statement: applicants will submit a 750-word personal statement, which will be anonymized and ranked by current members of the Society of Fellows. The personal statement will address one of the following prompts:
    • This is how I plan to improve the world.
    • This is the book that changed my life.
    • This is the experience that changed my life.

Application Procedure

Applicants are responsible to submit intent to apply by emailing Rabbi Aryeh Mannheim, Director of Admissions of Lander College for Men no later than March 1 (aryeh.Mannheim@touro.edu). A review of completed applications will be reviewed starting April 1, and interviews will be scheduled. Final decisions will be announced no later than May 15.

Students accepted to the Lander Society of Fellows may defer their admission for one to two years for study in Yeshivah. Confirmation will require a second interview in the spring prior to the semester of intended registration in Lander College for Men.
